Crossing the Forum, it was the victorious leader's (dux) path toward the Capitoline Hill. It was declared sacred because according to legend Romulus and Titus Tazio crossed it after the alliance at the end of the war between the Romans and the Sabines. It was also monthly used for religious solemn ceremonies and sacrifices.
